Do I need to use plus grade of gas rather than regular grade with more octane?

only 1/3 bottle of lucas octane booster gave power, upper cyl. running smoother. When refilled with 89 octane seems now running like before I added the booster. Is there any bad effects from using the booster? I know my care recommends 89 octane.
